Istiqlal Mosque

Istiqlal Mosque, or Masjid Istiqlal, (Independence Mosque) is the largest mosque in South East Asia. This national mosque was built to commemorate the Indonesian independence, hence the name "Istiqlal", which in Arabic it means "independence". The mosque is positioned next to Merdeka Square and the Jakarta Cathedral. People are welcomed to visit any day at any time, and there is no ticket to enter.

Jakarta Cathedral

Jakarta Cathedral (or Gereja Katedral Jakarta) is a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Jakarta, which is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Jakarta. Its official name is Gereja Santa Maria Pelindung Diangkat Ke Surga (from Dutch, De Kerk van Onze Lieve Vrouwe ten Hemelopneming, in English: The Church of Our Lady of Assumption). This  cathedral was built in the neo-gothic style and it is located in Central Jakarta near Merdeka Square and it stands right in the front of the Istiqlal Mosque.

Jin de Yuan

This old Chinese Buddhist temple compound dates from 1755. It is located not too far from the Petak Semilan street market, and it is one of the most important temples in the city. It is easy to spot  because the roof is characterized by two dragons that are eating pearls. The interiors are filled with wooden patterns and intricate carvings and the atmosphere is enhanced by the many incenses and candles that fill up the place.

Gereja Sion

Also known as Gereja Portugis (Portuguese Church), it is the oldest church in Jakarta. It is dated from 1695 and it was built just outside the old city walls. This church was built for slaves captured from Portuguese trading ports. The style of the interiors of the church is baroque. The church also features the authentic organ and copper chandeliers.
